World's Biggest Women Festival - Attukal Bhagavathy Pongala
The grand celebration of Attukal Bhavavathy Pongala is going to be celebrated in the city on February 28. Considered
to be the most powerful deity and incarnation of Kannagi of Salapathikaram, the celebration is going to grand as it has high influence over the tradition and culture of Tamil Nadu.
KS Dev Anand one of the Organizer said, the festival has great importance and has high influence over the tradition of Tamilnadu. He also added that there are three temple in Kerala and one in Eastern Srilanka in Batticalao.
If you go according to the legend and myth, people believed that Kannagi, on her journey after reducing Madurai to ashes, continue her journey to Chera Nadu (Kerala). En route her feet touched the cool and pristine water of the Kili in Tamilnadu and since then the place came to be known as Attukal, meaning Atturu –river and Kal means feet.
Kannagi after the journey calmed down and she was feeling hungry and started looking for food all around. There she saw Pandaram cooking food and she went there to get some food. The poor pandaram was happy and offered food, Simple boiled rice, Ponga Choru to the Devi and she ate it. Ultimately a temple came out at that spot.
The temple is visited by several lakh of women from all over India and abroad and this year also the organizers are hoping to increase. In the year 1997 nearly around 18 lakhs women visited the temple of the deity and this year the turnout may reach to 28 lakh, making to the list of Guiness World Record for the largest congregation.
KS Dev Anand one of the Organizer said, people of Tamilnadu where not aware about the temple dedicated to kannagi in Trivandrum till March 2009.
“As a 25-lakh strong congregation performs Pongala in a radius of 12 km around the temple, it is called the Sabarimala of women,” he said.
The Pongala celebrations which started in the year 2009 in the city is scheduled to be performed at ICL Home Town, Noombal, on Febraury 26. Around 25 lakh strong congregations is going to perform in the raidus of 12 kms around the temple.
