Responsible Tourism to be extended to 112 panchayats

The Responsible Tourism (RT) model in Kumarakom is getting approval for Kerala government from the United Nations(kumar
World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) last month. It will be extended to 112 panchayats in the first phase. The RT model was successful in developing tourism by actively involving the local communities, and that the government would take all necessary measures to replicate the RT model in 112 panchayats in the first phase, a release stated.

It is a tourism culture that is in mix with the environment and social culture of the state. The UNWTO Ulysses Award is a major recognition for the activities of the state tourism. The RT model had opened up various revenue generating avenues for the local communities

The state government’s RT model focuses on three kinds of responsibilities that are termed as the ‘triple bottom-line’ economic responsibility, social responsibility and environmental responsibility. It generates greater economic benefits to locals and enhances the wellbeing of local communities.

A P Anil Kumar, Minister for Tourism, Government of India, said that the government wanted to make Responsible Tourism a major revenue generating model for local communities. The local people should get the benefit of the growth of the tourism sector in the state. The government had organised a technical workshop for all panchayat presidents in the state to highlight the benefits of the RT model and implement it.
