Kerala Tourism has launched a new website (http://when-it-rains.com)
which features gesture- control to help its viewers. According to an official
statement here on Saturday, this kind of website is the first by a state
tourism board in India, it introduces a user to the rain washed plains, foggy
hills and the grand backwaters of Kerala through a gesture-based interface
.
Kerala Tourism launched this website as part of the monsoon promotion.
The new website is among the few tourism website in the world which uses
gesture-controlled technology. Stark Communications, the official marketing and
communications outfit of the Kerala tourism department, developed this new
website which uses visually stunning images of the monsoon shot by Facebook
fans of Kerala Tourism. The website gives a user friendly experience by
tracking movements and gestures made by a user in front of a webcam and
responds to them.
Kerala Tourism secretary Suman Billa said, “We are proud to
present an innovative new website to users across the world who can now sit in
front of a computer or a smart phone, and enjoy the diverse experiences of the
monsoon in Kerala even before it arrives in the region”.
Kerala Tourism director Hari Kishore described this new
website as another step towards promoting Kerala to the world. More important,
the new website is a blend of innovative technology and the mesmerizing
experiences of the fans of Kerala across the world, Kishore added.
The social media were quick to embrace the Kerala Tourism’s
new website, as since its launch on May 28, 2013, the gesture-controlled
website has already received over 1,00,000 visits. The post on Facebook about
the website also has been seen by around 8,00,000 people so far with 13,000
likes, besides 300 tweets about the website.
Kerala Tourism is an initiator in using technology to
promote its tourism in India and abroad. Its award-winning website is one of
the most viewed website in the world. The state’s tourism department had
organized a live webcast of a Theyyam performance from a temple on its website
for global audience.
