All Weather Roads Suggested by Experts in Uttarakhand

Garhwal region was affected badly during the flood times in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, the roads
were fully deteriorated. Experts suggest constructing all weather roads including of 99.6 km long with a total of 14 tunnels that would save the time of the travelers and also decrease the distance, according to a fresh plan presented to the government. The tunnel project is estimated to cost around 18, 791.5 crores according to the adviser to the state planning commission, Harshpati Unniyal.

Beside this place, the all weather roads are being built in several other places of Uttarakhand, Rohtang in Himachal Pradesh and Zozila in Jammu and Kashmir in order to avoid any problems that may disturb the travelers while traveling to these places.

Unniyal said that the schemes of building all weather roads would be soon put in front of the Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna.

According to a civil engineer the project is the brainchild of the planning adviser, Unniyal.

Unniyal said, “The road networks of the Garhwal region is almost fully dependent on tourism with more than 10 lakh of devotees visiting annually. The current road in the Chardham circuit of Uttarakhand has been built along the river valley and close to huge rivers like Bhagirathi, Alaknanda and Mandakini which is almost defenseless to natural disaster like landslides, floods and other subsidence.”

“Colossal loss of life and assets has become a yearly feature beside the magnified cost of preservation. Hence, all weather roads are crucial also because of the China border, he added.”

There are several benefits if the project is started, from reducing the road distance from 813 km to 389 km hence shortening the overall distance by about 423 km, saving of fuel and time, avoiding hair pin and other dangerous bends and turns. The prime benefit of building these roads is creating fresh connectivity to some of the tourist spots like Madhya Maheshwar and Dodi Taal which are virgin tourist areas.

According to the recent studies tremendous rain events are becoming more regular than modest rain events which are devastating areas in the Himalayas, experts said.

Unniyal said, “The fresh project will also aid in horticulture, tourism, industry sectors and agriculture particularly in the rural areas of Uttarakhand, along with other development and growth.”

Road accidents at places like Lambaggar in Chamoli district which is prone to landslides would also be decreased with the aid of the new project.
