as a leisure destination by private tourism developers. Many resorts are coming up in Karadipara and Vadakottathara in Agali panchayat and Varagampadi and Veerannoor in Sholayur panchayat of Attappadi.
Hills are the main locations, where
such development is taking place. There is used earth moving machinery to lay
roads and build cottages, in violation of the law. It is raising concerns
regarding their impact on the environment. These illegal acts are often
facilitated by local panchayats which issue licences.
One multinational private tourism
developers get the permission on September 20, 2012 for their Karadippara
project. The work on the resort, located in 42.38 acres, is progressing on 10
cottages, each having an area of 69 square metres. Only 14.38 acres has been
registered in the name of that private company and the remaining 28 acres have
been registered in the name of 12 persons.
According to an official report, the
resort is coming up on revenue land. Now the work has been stopped on grounds
of ecological destruction. Around 14 cents of land have been cleared on another
hillock.
There are 28 illegal quarries
functioning in Attappadi. The granite from these sites are being used for
construction of these resorts. The officials issued two stop memos. One in
2012, it was for razing down the hills and causing ecological degradation and
the second one in four months ago, that was regarding a boundary dispute with
Attappadi Co-operative Farming Society (ACFS).
